  EARLY CHILDHOOD Abraham Lincoln is one of the most well-known figures in American history, revered for his leadership during the Civil War and his role in ending slavery in the United States. But before he became the 16th President of the United States, Lincoln had a childhood that was marked by hardship and struggle. Born on February 12, 1809, in a log cabin in Hodgenville, Kentucky, Abraham Lincoln was the second child of Thomas and Nancy Hanks Lincoln.
